The 8th Biennial Conference of the European Wildlife Disease Association (EWDA) will be held in Rovinj, Istria, Croatia from 2-5 October, 2008. 45°04'23''N 13°38'28''E.
The town of Rovinj is one of the most visited seaside resorts in Croatia, located on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula and as such is the meeting point of the Northern Adriatic offering a wide range of high-quality tourist opportunities in a picturesque ambience of an ancient town, surrounded by beautiful pine forests.
Through the quality and the content of presentations we strive to make the EWDA Conference the leading event for the dissemination of valuable scientific information as well as an enjoyable one. The EWDA invites members and others interested in conferring wildlife diseases and in promoting wildlife health to attend the conference.
Veterinarians, pathologists, wildlife biologists, epidemiologists, ecologists, and any person interested in the wildlife health should attend and join together in a challenging opportunity to discuss the imminent issues of wildlife diseases. Focusing on Diseases of the European Wildlife
and Recent Changes in their Distribution
The 8th Conference of EWDA will focus its scientific programme on the issues of diseases of the European wildlife and recent changes in their distribution. With special concern on facing the wildlife-human-livestock interface, and (re)emerging diseases of public health concern and the role of wildlife, focusing greatly on novel issues of diseases such as tuberculosis, bluetongue, avian influenza, or West Nile fever.
This Mediterranean Conference will also promote issues of diseases of marine mammals, and the health of marine ecosystems especially through the health and disease issues of the Mediterranean wildlife.
For the 2008 Conference, the European Wildlife Disease Association (EWDA) has invited submissions of papers on topics concerning the wildlife-human-livestock interface; emerging diseases, avian influenza, west Nile fever, diseases and preservation of endangered species, marine mammals and health of marine ecosystems, as well as papers on general wildlife issues, diseases of carnivores, ungulates, birds, lagomorphs, reptiles, amphibians and exotics, wildlife disease reporting and surveillance, epidemiology and environmental drivers of wildlife diseases; wildlife disease tools and techniques; and training.

Professor Morner from the Department of Pathology and Wildlife Diseases (formerly Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environment) of the National Veterinary Institute (Uppsala, Sweden) will be giving the keynote address on the topic of the current and most important wildlife diseases in Europe. Dr. Morner is an active member of the OIE group putting together the data of the disease situation in wildlife in Europe and thus has an excellent overview of diseases of the wildlife.

Chemical immobilization in the 21st century: the future or back to the future?
Dr. Kreeger from the Veterinary Services Branch of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (USA) will be giving the keynote address on the topic of chemical immobilization and wildlife handling covering general topics on wildlife chemical immobilization and handling applicable to European wildlife species with suggested responses to animal and human emergencies in the field. Dr. Kreeger is also the author of the renowned Handbook of Wildlife Chemical Immobilization.

Expansion of bluetongue in Europe and climate change
Professor Mellor from the School of Biological Sciences of the University of Aberdeen and the Department of Arbovirology of the Institute for Animal Health, Pirbright Laboratory (Surrey, UK) is an OIE international expert for bluetongue and African horse sickness. Professor Mellor will be giving an address on the epidemiology of bluetongue in Europe focusing on climate-change as the driving force behind the recent and unprecedented extensions in its distribution.

Biology and health of Croatian large carnivore populations
Professor Huber and his Large Carnivore Research Team of the Zagreb Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Croatia) have been studying the biology and health status of brown bears, gray wolves and Eurasian lynx in Croatia ever since 1981, and the yielded results were all applied in conservation and management of those species. Along with the Scandinavian large carnivores populations, the Croatian populations are probably the best studied and managed in Europe.

Cetacean mortality along the Adriatic coastline
Professor Gomercic’s Group from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb (Croatia) is amongst the most active sea-mammal fact-finding assemblies on the Mediterranean focusing on whales, and dolphins primarily. They will be offering an insight into causes of death, pathomorphologic findings, species abundance, and influence of anthropogenic activity in cetaceans through retrospective studies and 20 years of observations on the Croatian Adriatic coast.
